The punching die is an important supporting part of the tablet press. The punch and the middle die of the traditional tableting machine are made of steel. In the process of tableting, friction will occur between the powder and the die wall and the upper and lower punches. This friction will reduce the transmission of the powder axial and radial forces, resulting in uneven distribution of pores and density in the powder, and in severe cases it will lead to The sheet weight varies greatly, and there are problems such as splits, laminations, and machine damage during sheet output. Moreover, friction will generate heat, and high temperature will affect the stability of heat-sensitive drugs.

A common method is to apply lubricant to the rotary die of the tablet press to reduce wear or replace the punch with a new one. Lubricants are mostly hydrophobic substances, which can prolong the disintegration time of the tablet and prevent water from entering the interior of the tablet, so the larger the dosage, the greater the impact. However, the commonly used lubricant is magnesium stearate (obtained from animals), which is not easy to use in large quantities, and if the human body absorbs magnesium stearate excessively, it is easy to induce stones.

In order to reduce the friction of the die, some researchers came up with the idea of using zirconia instead of steel. Zirconia die, zirconia has good toughness, and is an ideal wear-resistant material in engineering applications. It has high hardness and wear resistance, thus prolonging the use time of abrasive tools. The low coefficient of friction reduces the time it takes to compress the powder and, more importantly, the tablet press production time.
